On the occasion of Women’s History Month, we decided to sit down with Mehak Junaid, the force behind known fashion brand ‘Souchaj’. So following is an excerpt of our interview with her:
1. What inspired you to start your own business in the fashion industry?
I’ve always been fascinated by the idea of creating timeless pieces that tell a story. Growing up, I was surrounded by beautiful fabrics and intricate embroidery, which sparked my love for craftsmanship. Souchaj was born out of a desire to celebrate heritage and artistry, creating pieces that can be passed down through generations. I wanted to build a brand that values quality over quantity and honors the traditions of couture
2. What challenges did you face as a female entrepreneur? And how did you overcome them?
Managing a team was my biggest challenge as a creative entrepreneur used to working independently. Growing the business required me to learn leadership, effective communication, delegation, and motivation. Balancing being a boss and a friend was tough, but I realized a strong team was essential. I invested in developing my leadership skills and empowering my team. Now, I have a passionate, cohesive team that shares my vision, and I’m proud of what we’ve achieved together.
3. There are many fashion designers in the industry. How do you differentiate yourself from them?
Souchaj stands out because of its commitment to creating heirloom pieces. We don’t follow trends; instead, we focus on timeless designs that are meticulously crafted with the finest materials. Every piece is a labor of love, blending traditional techniques with modern sensibilities. Our clients aren’t just buying a garment—they’re investing in a piece of art that carries emotional value and can be cherished for years to come.
4. Do you think social media plays a big role in helping expand your business?
Yes absolutely, social media is crucial. It helps us showcase our craftsmanship, connect with a global audience by becoming a visual diary that allows us to share our handcrafted couture collections with people who appreciate the artistry of couture.
5. Looking back, what’s one thing you wish you had known about your particular industry?
I wish I had known how important it is to balance creativity with business strategy. Success requires both a strong vision and solid operational skills
6. How would you describe your design aesthetic in 3 words?
Timeless , classic, heirloom
7. What influences your creative process?
My creative process is influenced by my surroundings, culture, and personal experiences. I draw inspiration from nature, art, and travel. I’m also inspired by strong women who embody confidence and individuality
