- : Sat,Mar.2025
As the month of March known as the ‘Women’s History Month’, so we decided to get in touch with rising fashion designer Maryam who owns the brand ‘Eshaal Mishkaat’. Her brand has a unique vibe and the idea behind the formation of her brand totally won us over. Following is an excerpt of our interview with her:
1. What inspired you to start your own business in the fashion industry?
Due to lack of modern modest clothing, I decided to launch my own fashion brand. My goal is to combine contemporary style with modesty, offering options that let individuals express their taste while upholding their values. My brand aims to empower people to feel confident and stylish without compromising their principles.
2. What challenges did you face as a female entrepreneur? And how did you overcome them?
One of the significant challenges I faced was not being taken seriously in a male-dominated business environment. Despite the progress women are making globally, there are still instances where men question the authority and capabilities of women in leadership roles.
To overcome this challenge, I focused on building a strong network of supportive mentors and allies who believed in my vision and abilities.
3. There are many fashion designers in the industry. How do you differentiate yourself from them?
Although the fashion industry is filled with talented designers, it often overlooks the niche market for women seeking modest yet stylish options. This is where I distinguish myself. My designs are specifically crafted for those who wish to dress modestly without compromising on contemporary style. My collections celebrate modest fashion, providing women with choices that empower them to express their individuality while adhering to their values, thus fulfilling a genuine need that many women face.
4. Do you think social media plays a big role in helping expand your business?
Social media is essential for business growth today. It helps with marketing, brand building, and connecting with a global audience, enhancing brand awareness and customer loyalty. It also provides advertising tools for brand awareness.
5. Looking back, what’s one thing you wish you had known about your particular industry?
One key realization I had is that it’s crucial to treat a business seriously from the start. I initially saw it as a hobby, which led to missed opportunities and a lack of focus. Also, having a mentor or a strong network is extremely valuable, and I didn’t have that. A mentor can offer guidance, share insights, and help overcome challenges, which can speed up growth and avoid common mistakes.
6. How would you describe your design aesthetic in 3 words?
Modest,
Modern,
Minimal.
7. What influences your creative process?
My creative process truly blends my personal style, values, and a quest for elegance. I always start by envisioning how the piece would feel to wear, making sure it aligns with my values of modesty. This connection to my work fosters my creativity and helps me assess whether a design reflects the qualities I cherish, like elegance and sophistication. This introspective approach not only guides my choices but also opens up endless possibilities in my creative journey.
8. There are a lot of misconceptions surrounding fashion designers. Did you experience any?
I haven’t encountered any misconceptions about fashion designers in my experience.
9. What would you say to aspiring female designers looking to enter the industry?
Starting in a new industry can be challenging, but a positive attitude is essential. There are many opportunities to explore, and believing in yourself is important. Stay true to your values and remain strong when facing difficulties. The journey may feel overwhelming, but don’t forget who you are. Embrace learning and growth, trust your skills, and with confidence and resilience, you can succeed and make the most of the opportunities available.
10. Mashallah, you have accomplished a lot as a designer. So what is next for you?
I believe I’m currently navigating the journey towards success, though I haven’t quite reached the pinnacle yet. I’m still in the phase where challenges abound, but I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished so far. There is so much more to learn and achieve, and my next aspiration is to truly make a mark. I want Eshaal Mishkaat to become a recognized name, a brand with a story that resonates. My goal is to open stores across various cities in Pakistan, and with determination and perseverance, I am confident that, InshAllah, this vision will become a reality.
